Why the shortage?

The shortage of vehicles started because of the global pandemic when semiconductor chip manufacturers switched production of microchips from those required by motor vehicles to those required in PCs, laptops, tablets and mobile phones. This was because their usage increased so much during lockdown. During these dark days, many worked remotely and also used these devices more during their free time as there wasn’t as much to do during the restrictions.

Semi-conductor chips are used with EVERYTHING to do with your car whether it is electric, hybrid, petrol or diesel. These chips are used for all functions in your car such as infotainment, aircon, all safety features including airbags, seatbelt tensioners and ABS. They are also vital to the operation of your car keys and the ever-popular parking sensors.

The news is getting better!

The manufacture of semiconductor chips is increasing and although some of the production is still affected by the war in Ukraine, the major semiconductor manufacturers have made huge investments over the past eighteen months and this has resulted in a much more efficient supply chain. There are still big challenges though, with some people waiting more than twelve months for their new car. Try to plan ahead.
