Car finance schemes: Clergy
Our original clergy car scheme was set up for Roman Catholic Priests in the Liverpool Archdiocese and the Catholic scheme is still marketed as the Interdiocesan Car Scheme. This scheme is open to priests, deacons, religious, administration staff and housekeepers. Elsewhere, the clergy car scheme is known as ‘Motoring Solutions for Clergy’. The ‘Motoring Solutions for Clergy’ brand started off as a scheme for Anglicans in the North-Western group of dioceses (Chester, Manchester, Liverpool, Blackburn and Carlisle), but has since spread to cover the entire country, including the Church in Wales as well as the Scottish Episcopal Church. Newgate’s customers are also now widely-represented in the Church of Scotland, the Methodist Connexion and the United Reformed Church, as well as the Congregationalists, the United Free Church of Scotland and the Free Church of Scotland.
Since the business moved from Pangbourne to Edinburgh in 2004, the percentage of Newgate’s Scottish business has risen to 25%
'Motoring Solutions for Clergy' is open to all stipendiary and non-stipendiary clergy, including NSMs, OLMs, Readers, Churchwardens; Methodist and URC Presbyters and Deacons, lay workers, local preachers, synod secretaries, circuit stewards; Church of Scotland Ministers, Deacons, Readers and Elders; and administration staff and retired clergy of all denominations. School, Hospital and Forces Chaplains are not forgotten, of course!
Special arrangements are also available for the following categories of people:
- Catholic Priests who may be members of a religious order, who may not be permitted to hold assets in their own name and where the car needs to be financed via the Diocese.
- Visiting Ministers of the Methodist Church, for example, who may have no credit history in the UK and who might otherwise find it difficult to obtain credit in their own name.
- Other clergy who may be in the country on a fixed-term contract.
- Youth workers, other community workers and Child Support Officers
