Holy in one!
Held at Kilmacolm Golf Course in Renfrewshire, the match was organised by Edinburgh-based Newgate Motoring Solutions – a leading supplier of cars to the clergy – and it was hailed as a major step forward in the campaign against sectarianism.
Father Stephen Dunn, tournament director of the Scottish Clergy Golfing Society and a priest in the East End of Glasgow, commented: “Initial apprehensions soon disappeared and there was great all-round camaraderie. It was a very enjoyable day.”
The Rev. John Chalmers from Edinburgh, who played in the Church of Scotland team, added: “It was an extremely successful event which we now intend to hold annually. It achieved our objective of demonstrating the churches are united in their determination to stamp out sectarianism.”
Teams played the 18-hole course in mixed groups but the Catholic Church won the inaugural Newgate Church Cup on better individual scores.
The trophy was handed over by sponsor Nigel Williams, who said: “Golf is a great way of bringing people together and it’s appropriate that this latest step towards improving understanding between faiths took place in Scotland.” Just one thing, though: Amen Corner is at Augusta, right?
